Gorgeous A-frame retreat is also off-grid

This gorgeous A-frame perches on a hill outside Gundagai in New South Wales, Australia, on Kimo Estate, a 7,000-acre working farm that pulls double duty as a wedding venue that also offers vacation rentals. Designed by Anthony Hunt Design and Luke Stanley Architects, JR’s Hut, as it’s called, measures just 28 square meters (301 square feet) but is big on beautiful, considered design.

The eco-minded home was constructed by a two-person team (owner and builder) using sustainable Australian hardwoods that were locally sourced as well as other reclaimed timber. A corrugated metal roof tops the structure and creates deep overhangs on the two open ends, one of which forms the main entrance and the other a glazed wall transitioning into a wooden deck.

Other materials include concrete, while details like industrial fittings, glass louvers, wood-burning stove, paneled walls, and built-in storage elevate the design beyond the rustic. Still, one may be surprised to know that the hut is also completely off-grid: lights are solar-powered, while water is collected from an underground rain tank and heated by solar power. An architecturally sophisticated retreat that’s also off-grid? A dream come true.
