A woman has been sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years with supervision, for making her junior high school-aged daughter steal 41 toy cars from a supermarket in western Japan in June.
In handing down the sentence, Judge Miho Uda of the Otsu District Court said, “The defendant was targeting toy cars that she could resell for a high price. She ordered her daughter to steal them because she thought that if she did so herself, she would be sent to jail.”
“It is also striking that she has habitually ordered her daughter to steal food,” the judge said. But the judge gave the woman a suspended term in consideration of her having repaid the stolen goods.
According to the ruling, the woman had her daughter, then 12, steal 41 toy cars worth about 40,000 yen shortly before 11 a.m. on June 16 at a supermarket in Ritto, Shiga Prefecture.
The items were then resold to a recycling shop, the ruling said.
