Crucial to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s happiness, and his sense of equilibrium, is the piano. At his former apartment here in Leipzig, in the city’s elegant Waldstrassen Quarter, he insisted on installing a Bluthner grand, so that he could ease off after training sessions through performing his favourite compositions by ear.

His tastes are eclectic, spanning hip-hop to Handel’s Zadok the Priest, if he happens to be in a Champions League frame of mind. On away trips with RB Leipzig, he was not averse to tinkling the ivories in the hotel lobby, his party trick being Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence.
