The ‘Avengers 4: Endgame’ Trailer Reveals More Questions Than Answers

(Source: ladbible.com)

*WARNING: contains MCU spoilers*

It’s been a tense period for Marvel fans recently. We knew a trailer was on its way for the follow-up to this year’s sensational Avengers: Infinity War, but no one could agree on when it was going to land. All predictions proved false, and despite hosting a Q&A at Collider’s Avengers event last week, the directorial team of Anthony and Joseph Russo refused to discuss the new movie.

Well, good news – the title has been revealed as Avengers: Endgame, and the trailer is finally here:

Pretty gripping stuff, right? But before you leg it to your nearest Odeon to start queueing, let’s have a look at what we’ve learned from the new trailer. Or, more specifically, let’s consider the questions we’re now left with.

How did Ant Man escape the Quantum Realm?

Firstly, Ant-Man is back! Anyone who’s seen Ant-Man And The Wasp (and particularly its eerie post-credits scene) will already know that Paul Rudd’s lovably goofy hero somehow survived Thanos extinguishing half of all living creatures in the universe, having gone subatomic and entered the Quantum Realm before the big moment.

But how did he get back, since everyone who could possibly have helped him seemed to turn to the same black dust that everyone evaporated into at the end of Infinity War?

What’s more, the Endgame trailer shows Captain America getting pretty excited about Ant-Man popping up – could he play a vital part in defeating Thanos’ maniacal plan? And having effectively been in another dimension when shit went down, could he know where the eviscerated Avengers are now?

What’s happened to Hawkeye?

Another character who’s back is Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who didn’t feature at all in Infinity War, and some fans are speculating that he might have taken the character’s route from the comics to evolve into a new guise: Ronin.

The word ‘ronin’ is a term for a masterless samurai who operates alone – so does this mean our old favourite Hawkeye is now working separately to the rest of the Avengers?

Is it the end of Iron Man?

Things are looking pretty bleak for Iron Man too, floating up there in space with his oxygen running dangerously low. Will he survive?

There have been numerous fan theories about the popular character, played by Robert Downey Junior. One suggests he actually died at the end of Avengers Assemble, with the Tony Stark we see in the other films coming from a parallel dimension, thanks to Dr Strange.

Where is Rocket?

As the last surviving member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, where the fuck is Rocket? The rest of the Guardians or the Galaxy were wiped out by the snap, but he and Thor forged an unlikely friendship during Infinity War. Are they off gallivanting around the space-time continuum, like a cosmic double act?

Does Dr Strange already know how it all ends – and did he let Thanos win the last one?

The most obvious question, though, stems from Dr Strange’s memorable scene in Infinity War, where he scanned vast numbers of possible outcomes to the Avengers’ attempts to take down Thanos – more than 14 million – but could find only one scenario in which they won.

So does this mean – as fans have suspected – that the only way to achieve a happy ending was to allow the galactic warlord to wipe out half of existence? Did Dr Strange sacrifice uncountable numbers of lives in the hope that this could all be overturned?

The Russo brothers have confirmed our worst fears a while back: all those characters definitely died, so you can only imagine there’s an outrageously complex plan in place to overturn all this, or else the MCU is going to look very different in future.
