The selection of songs in this playlist is the perfect representation of my diverse and broad taste in music. This is my go-to playlist to help me transit from regular work days into late nights. I love how as humans, we are all able to associate certain songs with a particular period or time in our life, which is why my inspiration usually stems from songs that create and inspire a feeling of nostalgia.
My mother was a cabaret singer and she used to sing a lot of old jazz tunes. As a child, I loved watching her sing and perform. ‘Makin’ Whoopee’ by Ella Fitzgerald was one of the songs in her repertoire and it always made me wish that I could live in a bygone era. It was also one of my inspirations for LuLu’s Lounge. For some reason, 1960’s pop music does not seem to get the respect that I feel it deserves. I always felt ‘These Boots are Made for Walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra had the right amount of peppy, toe-tapping beats and indignant lyrics, so this is me, paying homage to a song that I feel deserves so much more recognition!
Iggy Pop is the godfather of the punk movement. What else needs to be said? I am a sucker for overly sappy heartfelt tunes. Songs that you can scream out the lyrics, while listening to alone in your house. To me, nobody does sappy better than Meat Loaf in his song ‘I’d Do Anything For Love.’
‘Girl I’ll House You’ by Jungle Brothers is a song that reminds me of the time when I first started going out to clubs in New York during the early nineties. Back then, this was considered one of the first hip-house songs and was a staple at every dance party.
