Julia Roberts Didn’t Mean to Become a Clapback Queen, Discovers She’s an Instagram Creeper

Julia Roberts took to Intagram “like a fish takes to water,” according to Busy Philipps on Sunday’s edition of “Busy Tonight,” but the actress had no idea how good she was.

In fact, it quickly became clear through their interview that Roberts is not really up on any of the social media jargon. And yet, when she chose to come back at someone who criticized her nail polish, she did it with such scathing dry wit it was instantly a classic.

“I did not mean to clap back. I’d never heard the words clap back,” Roberts admitted. “I was just being amusing. Something stumbled into my eyeball range and I was like, ‘Oh.’ And I just was being funny and a little school-teacher-correcting. And then people were like clapback.”

She joked that she had a hard time understanding the terminology, too. “For me, I am an actor,” she said. “Clapping is my sustenance.”

The “Homecoming” star did admit to Philipps — who’s a bit of an IG queen herself — that she’d been a fan of Philipps social media presence for more than a year now, which got Philipps doing the math, and asking how that was possible. Roberts described herself as a “watcher,” and it was at this moment she learned that what she was doing was called creeping.

“I didn’t feel creepy about it until now,” she said after Philipps teased her. “I felt super good about it until this moment.”

Later in the show, Philipps really got down to the nitty-gritty, asking Roberts about that infamous photo of her from the “Notting Hill” way back in 1999. Nearly twenty years ago now, Roberts was caught by photographers sporting armpit hair and the world cracked in half.

Somehow, we all survived, but since that time Philipps has wanted, nay needed to know if this was a form of statement by Roberts at the time or more of a whoops moment. And we’re not gonna lie, Roberts response had every bit of that graceful sass that made her an instant clapback legend and we are here for it.

“I think I just hadn’t really calculated my sleeve length and the waving and how those two things would go together and reveal personal things about me,” she said as Philipps laughed. “So it wasn’t so much a statement, as it’s just part of the statement that I make as a human on the planet for myself.”

Julia Roberts is making a huge statement in her first television series, starring in “Homecoming,” now streaming on Amazon Prime.
