Rockstar Games is absolutely rolling in it at the moment – money, that is, not pig shit like Arthur and Lenny. Where is he, by the way?
All bonding missions aside, every gamer (bar PC ones, sorry) knows just how brilliant and successful Red Dead Redemption 2 has been so far, but for for those who still need reminding, take a look at these shipping figures.
According to Take-Two Interactive [via Fraghero], Rockstar’s parent company, as of yesterday over 17 million Red Dead 2 copies have shipped worldwide. That’s a lot of CDs, and cash.
Of course, not every copy will be physical – we imagine digital downloads make up most of this number. It’s also worth noting that Rockstar hasn’t technically sold 17 million Red Dead 2 games, but that’s how many have been sent to stores.
Supply and demand, though, right? Retailers wouldn’t continue asking for copies if they weren’t flying off shelves. Hell, there’s some stores near me with signs up saying ‘Red Dead 2 sold out’.
So yeah, the game is obviously very popular, but how has it fared in comparison to other titles deemed ‘a success’ – in particular, the original Red Dead Redemption, hailed as one of the greatest releases for last-gen devices?
In short, RD2 catastrophically wiped the floor with its older brother. Since it launched way back 2010, Red Dead Redemption has managed to ship 15 million units all together.
Last month’s Wild West game, however, racked up this figure in just eight days, never mind eight years. Who knew cowboys were still cool? Rockstar obviously did.
Sadly for said cowboys, they’re not nearly as cool as Michael, Franklin, and Trevor from Los Santos. GTA V reportedly brought home $1 billion of revenue in three days, where as Red Dead 2 earned around $725 million in the same stretch.
