At an event in Los Angeles, Razer has announced the sophomore release of its lauded Razer Phone mobile gaming device. Pioneering the gaming phone market category in 2017 with the original Razer Phone, Razer has gone on to champion mobile esports and mobile gaming entertainment. With the Razer Phone 2, Razer is seeking to push the envelope of what is possible on mobile devices.

In its sophomore iteration, the Razer Phone 2 improves from its predecessor with 30% more in terms of absolute performance. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and Adreno 630 graphics, the Razer Phone 2 squeezes the more performance with a new Razer vapour chamber cooling system that boasts industry-leading thermal performance. This allows for sustained performance in terms of frame rates while feeling physically cooler and comfortable to hold in the hand. A new Razer Cortex app helps mobile gamers keep games organised, while recommending the latest 120Hz gaming titles. Razer Cortex will also optimise the Razer Phone 2’s performance for specific games with easy presets or manually.

The cameras have also been improved, with a new dual-camera setup on the rear. One 12-megapixel optically-stabilised lens provides for a wide-angle perspective, while a secondary 12-megapixel telephoto provides a 2x zoom. With Sony IMX sensors, these cameras will provide good low-light performance with great colour.

On the front, an FHD-capable 8-megapixel camera is useful for live-streamers, with adequate graphics without added peripherals.

Customisation is also an important feature on the phone. Users are able to skin their Razer Phone 2 with exclusive themes and wallpapers from the hottest gaming titles like Vainglory, Tekken and PUBG Mobile. The phone also comes equipped with Razer Chroma, an RGB lighting system that lights up the Razer triple-headed snake logo in 16.8 million colours. It also doubles up as a notification light, which can be customised for different applications. Lighting effects like static, spectrum cycling and breathing are also supported.

This lighting system is implemented on the new glass back, which also allows for wireless charging. Wired, the Razer Phone 2 supports Qualcomm QuickCharge 4+, which brings a flat battery to 50% in 30 minutes. Battery life and performance continues to be a main focus of the device, with a battery capacity of 4,000mAh.

The phone is tested at 10 hours of battery life at both 90 and 120Hz refresh rates, with optimisations.

The phone is sealed to IP67 water and dust resistance, with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the display.

There will only be a single SIM card slot, but retains the ability to upgrade storage with a micro SD card slot.

Like its predecessor, the Razer Phone 2 continues to be the only phone with a true 120Hz display, leveraging on the new cooling system to give high framerates and smooth action without stutter. The 5.7-inch UltraMotion IGZO display also offers 120Hz touch sampling, which means inputs are precise and match the information on the screen. The phone is also certified by Netflix for HDR video content with 5.1 Dolby Surround audio. It will come with a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle with a 24-bit DAC on board.

The Razer Phone 2 continues to feature dual front-facing speakers, with improved loudness and clarity with better hardware and Dolby Atmos integration. Despite an industry increasingly angled toward hybrid stereo speaker options with the trend toward a bezelless (or even notched) form factor, the Razer Phone 2 continues to keep its forehead and chin bezels which contains some of the best mobile speakers. This is to allow for better ergonomics and sound quality for extended gaming sessions.

Partnerships with trending gaming titles like PUBG, Marvel Future Fight, Runescape, and Guns of Boom also mean that the phone is optimised for the most demanding titles right now.

Connectivity will also be little issue with up to 802.11 ac support and dual-band MIMO, boasting up to 1.2Gbit/s speeds. It will ship with Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Razer Phone 2 will be available for preorders from October 11, at an RRP of USD 799 (SGD 1,105)/ EUR 849. Local pricing and availability has yet to be announced.
