The launch of DC Universe, timed to coincide with DC Comics’ annual Batman Day event, will offer early subscribers a chance to win several unique collectibles. Though the new streaming service offers a variety of comic books, television shows and movies based around various DC Comics properties, the emphasis this weekend is on Batman in all his incarnations.
The first digital subscription service of its kind, DC Universe offers fans of DC Comics’ superhero characters exclusive content and experiences not available in any other medium. This includes a variety of classic television series, both live-action and animated, including digitally-remastered, high-definition episodes of the 1977 Wonder Woman series starring Lynda Carter, and perennial fan-favorite Batman: The Animated Series. The service will also be producing a number of original series, starting with a live-action Titans show and a new season of the animated series Young Justice. Finally, DC Universe offers users access to a digital library of classic comic books.
As impressive as that all is, DC Universe goes one step beyond offering archived classic material and new television series. Subscribers also gain access to DC Daily, a news show regarding the latest developments from DC Entertainment. Users can also browse an online encyclopedia of DC Comics history, as well as shop for unique merchandise only available to DC Universe members. All of this is a veritable bargain at $7.99 per month, with annual subscriptions priced at $74.99.
“This weekend, as we celebrate one of our most iconic heroes, we launch a digital service that unites Super Heroes from every corner of the DC universe, from our most treasured films and comics to exclusive originals all-in-one place,” said Warner Bros. Digital Networks President Craig Hunegs, in a press release regarding the new streaming service. “DC Universe stands out as a fan-first service in what is quickly becoming a crowded marketplace of consumer choices. The fan response has exceeded our wildest expectations and we’re excited to share this truly unique experience with everyone.”
While the full range of DC Universe’s content is available now, the service’s front page is currently emphasizing its Batman related content in honor of Batman Day. The movie section suggests a variety of Batman films, ranging from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie to The Dark Knight and the recent animated film Gotham By Gaslight. The comics section promotes classics like The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One, along with the more obscure Batman: Year Two and Batman: Gothic. One can even enjoy a selection of single issues introducing Batman’s greatest enemies, such as the first appearances of The Joker and Ra’s Al Ghul.
The launch of DC Universe will also launch 30 days of exclusive prize giveaways. The first of these will be an exclusive bust from the DC Gallery collection, depicting The Joker. This collectible statue was sculpted by legendary special effects and make-up effects designer Rick Baker, renowned for his work on the Men in Black trilogy and Hellboy, among other classic horror and science fiction films. All in all, this sounds like an amazing start for DC Universe. The service is currently available through iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV and the Roku platform, as well as its own mobile web app and desktop website. Amazon Fire device support is expected to arrive shortly.
