A taxi driver in southwest China has been placed in detention for 10 days and sacked for sexually harassing a female passenger, a news website reported.
The case comes amid concerns about women passengers’ safety in cabs in China after an airline stewardess was murdered, allegedly by a driver working for the ride-hailing app Didi Chuxing.
The cab driver in Leshan in Sichuan province was shown in dashboard cam footage pulling down a woman passenger’s top as she got out of his car on Tuesday, while telling her she was “very pretty”, The Cover reported.
Police detained the 43-year-old driver, whose full name was not given, and his road transport licence has been revoked, according to the article.
The woman had formally complained to the authorities and told the website she wanted the case to serve as a warning to other women in Leshan.
She also said that during the taxi trip the driver had also reached over to the front passenger seat to remove a piece of hair from her exposed collar bone.
“Fortunately, I did not come across this incident at night,” she was quoted as saying.
The cab company, Leshan Foyun Taxi, apologised, saying it had dismissed the driver and would continue to investigate the incident, which had “exposed a management problem”.
The case comes after a woman was killed after hailing a ride from a Didi Chuxing driver in Zhengzhou in Henan province earlier this month.
The case prompted the ride-hailing app to suspend parts of its service across China to re-examine its safety measures, including changes to its “Didi Hitch” carpooling platform, which allowed drivers to access profile photos and ratings for its passengers.
Internet users were shocked by the incident in Leshan.
“No matter what kind of car you ride, when you’re alone you should definitely not sit in the front seat, both for your safety and for own peace of mind,” one person commented.
Social media users also expressed concerns about how the dashboard footage had been leaked to the media, which many saw as a violation of the woman’s privacy.
An investigation has been conducted into the leak, the website said, noting that “both the people who leaked the footage and those who broadcast it are suspected of privacy infringement”.
