That’s according to a recent New Yorker article by Sheelah Kolhatkar, which also revealed there could be more claims against men who’ve been identified as alleged harassers. “What they’ve been publicly named for is the tip of the iceberg,” an unnamed female entrepreneur told Kolhatkar in July.
The new allegations would add to a growing number of reports that women are regularly harassed or discriminated against in Silicon Valley. In 2015, a survey of 200 senior-level women in Silicon Valley found that 66 percent of participants reported they were excluded from important meetings because of their gender, and 60 percent reported unwanted sexual advantages in the workplace.
High-profile discrimination and harassment cases like those of Ellen Pao, a former junior partner with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Whitney Wolfe, a co-founder of Tinder, have made headlines but little change in the culture. Melinda Gates told The New Yorker men who “demean, degrade, or disrespect women” have been able to operate in industries like tech and venture capital, and that “the asymmetry of power is ripe for abuse.”
“The only people who didn’t know what was happening in Silicon Valley were the ones trying very hard not to see what was right in front of them,” Gates continued told. “I don’t think there’s a woman who has worked in tech who hasn’t experienced some form of bias or sexual harassment somewhere along the way–myself included.”
