If you were at the right hand of Nelson Mandela for almost two decades, what would  you know today? That’s what I asked Zelda la Grange, Mandela’s private assistant for 19 years, motivational speaker and author of Good Morning, Mr. Mandela. In this episode of Mentoring Moments we talk about how she—a white Afrikaner who grew up in a pro-apartheid family—got the job and how that role shaped her life.

Benny Gool

La Grange shares the stories behind some of Mandela’s legendary quotes including, “You must never allow the enemy to determine the grounds for battle.” Followed by: “The way you approach a person will determine how that person treats you.” And this one that’s so important in our world today: “If people can learn to hate, they can be taught to love.”

Tune in to find out why la Grange says, “I’m done with feeling guilty or giving explanations for why I say ‘no.’ I’ve realized that ‘no’ is a full sentence and that people will have more respect for me if I say ‘no’ rather than running around trying to please everyone.” Plus find out why she would send her younger self this message: “The faster you grow up and put your sensitivities and emotions aside, the easier life will become.”
