Giant robots, giant monsters, and John Boyega.
It’s kind of insane that we’re getting a Pacific Rim sequel. The original movie was a straight-up flop in the United States—it was beaten by Grown Ups 2, for god’s sake. But thankfully, was so successful abroad that Universal ultimately greenlit a sequel anyway. And lucky us, because, holy hell, Pacific Rim Uprising looks like a good time:
Pacific Rim: Uprising is set 10 years after the events of the original film. John Boyega stars as Jake Pentecost, the son of the war hero played by Idris Elba in Pacific Rim. (You might remember him shouting “TODAY WE ARE CANCELING THE APOCALYPSE.”) And while original stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Ron Perlman are sitting out the sequel, Uprising will feature a few returning faces, including Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day.
Most importantly: New giant robots vs. new giant monsters! What’s not to love?
Pacific Rim Uprising hits theaters on March 23. It’s gonna be a long wait.
