According to CR, its data collected about Microsoft’s Surface Laptops as well as its tablets were enough to “estimate predicted reliability for the company’s laptops.”

CR claims that its data shows the breakage rate for Microsoft’s laptops and tablets was “higher than most other brands”.  In response, Microsoft sent a statement where it said that it did not believe CR’s findings “accurately reflect Surface owners’ true experiences or capture the performance and reliability improvements made with every Surface generation.”

While CR did state that Microsoft’s products score high performance scores, often earning Very Good or Excellent Ratings, it also stated that reliability was something shoppers cared as much about as performance.

Previously CR had also removed the Recommended Rating from Apple’s latest MacBook Pros, but changed its mind after Apple gave feedback and updated the software.

Will Microsoft be able to also make CR change its mind? We’ll have to wait and see.
