LG announces the G6+ along with a major software update
LG has announced an upgraded variant of the G6 which is simply called the G6+.
The G6+ comes with double the RAM (6GB) and internal storage capacity (128GB) of the G6. It also comes with a pair of premium B&O PLAY earphones in the retail box. Wireless charging is also supported on the G6+ although this feature may not be available in all markets.
Other than these upgrades, the G6+ sports the same specs as the G6 including the same Snapdragon 821 processor, a 5.7-inch QHD+ display, dual 13MP cameras and a 3,300mAh battery. There is also a major software update consisting of an enhanced security option (Face Print) and user-friendlier features (Low Power Consumption and Covered Lens warning).
As the name suggests, Face Print is a facial recognition feature that allows users to unlock the G6/G6+ by simply holding the phone up to their faces without having to press any button. LG claims the camera will only be activated when the phone is raised to face and the entire unlocking process takes less than a second on average.
Low Power Consumption is an always-on feature that takes advantage of Qualcomm’s Hexagon DSP architecture to sense and collect data at all times from both sensors and wireless connections to enhance the user experience with third party apps. Covered Lens warning minimizes the chances of a finger or fingers accidentally getting into the frame of the shot by alerting the user with an on-screen notification.
The G6 and 6+ will come in two new colors: optical marine blue and optical terra gold. There is a lenticular film at the back of the phone to deliver a mesmeric optical effect. The exact dates of availability of the software update and the G6+ will vary across markets.
