Two top Sony TV execs join Apple to lead video programming

Apple has announced via a press release the hiring of two top Sony TV executives to lead video programming.

The two individuals, Jamie Ehrlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television since 2005. The new positions in Apple will see them manage all aspects of video programming and they report to Eddy Cue who is the Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services.

“Jamie and Zack are two of the most talented TV executives in the world and have been instrumental in making this the golden age of television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “We have exciting plans in store for customers and can’t wait for them to bring their expertise to Apple — there is much more to come.”

Since 2015, the iPhone maker has been rumored to be interested in making its own original video programs. Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal claimed that Apple had been in talks with producers in Hollywood for some months about buying rights to scripted TV shows.

Apple also hired former YouTube and Spotify executive Shiva Rajaraman and former Amazon Fire TV chief Timonthy D. Twerdahl to head its Apple TV business. Apple is also said to be planning to sell a premium TV bundle consisting of HBO, Showtime and Starz. In addition, a 6-episode drama featuring Dr.Dre is in the works.

The hiring of two industry veterans will boost Apple’s efforts in original content production. At the moment, Apple only has two projects in original content production which are Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke.
