E3 2017: Beyond Good & Evil 2 resurfaces after 9 years

There’s something satisfying about seeing a game pull through development hell, which in Ubisoft’s case has been Beyond Good and Evil 2.  Nine years after its original debut, a visibly emotional Michel Ancel re-announced the game fans had long been pining for.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is a prequel taking place before the birth of Jade, the first game’s protagonist. Set in the 24th Century, players will discover a multi-ethnic society on the distant System 3, where corporations have begun artificially engineering hybrids for slavery. As part of a rag-tag band of pirates, we’ll get to work our way from fighting for survival to traversing the stars.

Interestingly, Ubisoft are teasing what sounds to be co-op multiplayer, with promises that the game will offer a vast and seamless online world.  Unfortunately, as lovely as the below cinematic is, we didn’t get to see any actual gameplay.

In fact, we’re still in the dark over what platform the game will be on (presumably PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One like the rest of Ubisoft’s titles) or when the game is expected to release.

That’s a little worrisome, although Beyond Good and Evil 2 does have a lot to live up to. I’m sure we can afford to give Ancel a little more time to try and perfect things, especially when Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot seems happy to accommodate.

Sign-ups for a “Space Monkey Program” are now open for anyone interested in providing development feedback. Otherwise, the official site has supplementary information on the characters from the trailer and the city of Ganesha.

For now, here’s that same trailer with commentary by the director himself.
