Apple supplier Largan to ship 3D-sensing lenses later this year

3D-sensing modules could appear in smartphones in the latter part of the year.

Nikkei Asian Review reports that the iPhone camera lens supplier Largan Precision has confirmed its 3D-sensing modules would start shipping in the second half of the year. These 3D sensors provide facial and iris recognition for smartphones.

“We will have lenses for 3-D sensing [module used in smartphone] ready to ship in the second half this year,” said Adam Lin, Largan’s chief executive in a press conference after the company’s annual general meeting.

While Largan did not reveal who was behind the orders of these modules, an analyst from Yuanta Investment Consulting believes Apple is the only company which is capable of having such advanced features in a smartphone.

It is likely that the iPhone 8 could be the first smartphone to sport these 3D-sensing modules. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported in February that the iPhone 8 would have “revolutionary” 3D-sensing front cameras for facial recognition and iris recognition.
